The case for this venue
Temple Newsam is the richest historical proposition on the shortlist. Its interiors are museum-grade rather than wedding-industry pastiche. The question is not whether it is grand enough, but whether the team can shape one room so 15 guests feel gathered rather than scattered.
A fuller history
Neuhusam appears in Domesday. The estate was granted to the Knights Templar in 1155, establishing the name Temple Newsam.
Thomas, Lord Darcy built a vast courtyard house. After his part in the Pilgrimage of Grace, Henry VIII executed him and seized the estate.
Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, was born here. His marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots, and their son James connected Temple Newsam directly to the union of the English and Scottish crowns.
Sir Arthur Ingram bought the estate for £12,000 and rebuilt major parts of the house. His family and descendants occupied and reshaped it for the next 300 years.
The estate passed into public ownership and became one of Leeds's defining museum houses, preserving nationally important rooms, collections and parkland.
Thomas proposed the Dining Room for the ceremony and the adjacent Great Hall for drinks on 17 July. A restaurant lunch would avoid organising outside catering. Agree the room layout and privacy during the video viewing.
